HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE COLLECTION PROGRAM FOR RESIDENTIAL CUSTOMERS

Household hazardous waste cannot be recycled and poses a threat to the environment if not disposed of properly.  In partnership with Cowlitz County, we collect hazardous wastes from residential customers free of charge.  The waste is properly packaged in our collection facility and transported to licensed, disposal facilities through a contract-hauler. 

Batteries:  Batteries 9-volts and larger should be taped lengthwise over the terminals with electrical tape.  The tape prevents the terminals from connecting and starting a fire.

Total Volume: Total volume of household hazardous waste deposited at the facility cannot exceed 25 gallons or 200 pounds and individual items larger than 5 gallons or 50 pounds.  Prior approval is necessary for volumes exceeding this threshold.

Household Hazardous Waste Mobile Collection Events
We also conduct one mobile collection event per year in each of the following cities: Castle Rock, Kalama, Cathlamet, Ryderwood, and Woodland.

• Castle Rock - Saturday, April 7th,  9 am - 1 pm, Cascade Select Grocery Store (204 Cowlitz Street)
• Kalama - Saturday, May 5th,  9 am - 1 pm, parking lot behind Heritage Bank (Fir and Frontage Road)
• Cathlamet - Saturday, June 2nd, 9 am - 1 pm, PUD parking lot, behind County Courthouse (Division Street)
• Ryderwood - Wednesday, September 5th, 10 am - 12:30 pm, main road between libary and fire station
• Woodland - Saturday, October 27th, 9 am - 1 pm, eastside parking lot of Safeway

 Fluorescent Lamp Recycling

We currently do not accept lamps for recycling through our Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program, but we highly recommend customers contacting EcoLights, a Seattle-based company, for recycling options for fluorescent lamps, ballasts, and mercury-bearing devices.  EcoLights can be reached at (888) 214-2327 or (206) 343-1247.
